Since Annie is never going to be invited* to one of those...
Oh I was... two years ago when I mixed up my left and my other left on leaving the Ladies Restroom at Westham Football Club.
I was dressed as a woodland nymph in an olive green halterneck catsuit, with flowers in my hair and trailing long fronds of plastic fern from my rearend.

Which is one of the nice things about London :) no one bats an eye-lid when you get on the underground sporting a tail.
Anyway, I'd gotten a bit distracted by one of my most favourite songs ever starting... It's A Sin by the Petshop Boys (YAY) which followed the Kinks's Lola. Yes. That's good too... :) and when I hoved into view, dancing, twenty-five dinner-jacketed stags rose to their feet as one man - which is when it dawned on me they weren't the pottery class girls night out table at all. They did offer to be anything I wanted them to be if I stayed though, which was very sweet :)
And that's how I came to (still) hold the pottery class record for the most number of men to follow you back from the ladies room, people. Yes. I suspect their cake standing them up helped... but that is not why I'm here... I'm here to discuss clews.
Yes! Drake is one - and the Spanish were right, he was indeed a pirate, and he did pop by the colony - but he's not the name behind its establishment. That happens to be the other one shown here pre his meeting with the axe (and its wielder of course).
After a long think... I thought the following might not help you at all... which is why ... *drip coldhearted gaze down nose* ... I'm posting it :)

Hmmm. Cultivated for 10,000 years in South America ....... Syphilis ? Great hairstyles with dances to match ? A great view of the lower side of the Universe ? Death by cocaine & chocolate ?? Some really nasty water snakes ? Something exciting to stick up a Rutland tree ?
Kink's Lola : oh yes ! L-O-L-A .... :-)
Cheers, Mike.

Well then I suppose it's the guy the city in North Carolina is named for. However, I'm not sure right at this moment that I want to win. Or maybe I do. Being in charge of the thread is actually easier than playing it. Especially if you just play it straight and don't give hints to a shortcut answer. So, Raleigh, Sir My-middle-name.

@Annie : LOLA. That song I believe has a hidden meaning. You know it implies something but never quite comes out and says it. It took me years to work it out, and when I did well, it had quite an impact on me. I had to listen to the lyrics many times over before I was really sure. Wow ! It really took my breath away and was a real life changer. You know what that was ? Yes it is absolutely true :
....... they had Cherry Cola in 1972 long before the official release in 1985.

Cheers, Mike.

Ray Davies and his brother Dave and their band The Kinks released that here the summer of 1970 (they had already been around making famous and great songs for about 7 years) and when I first heard it back then it was "Coca-Cola" and they got in trouble for that line and it was changed to "Cherry Cola" on the singles version.
They are one of my all-time favorites.
That was back when we listened to music on the AM mono radio.

Yeah I almost did shrink that and now it is too late since they only give you an hour to edit (I think)
