What I want to have is about 150€
Send me private message if interested.

Ok, probably a waste of time

Ok, probably a waste of time but I'll try it any way, nothing to lose.

I have a Dell Mini tower E520 computer. As such it will only take an ATI HD 4770 1/2 - 3/4 length card needing just one X16 PCIE MB slot.

Does anyone have, or know, of a more powerful card for that machine? It would have to be short on length and in thickness to fit beside the Dell CPU cooling shroud. It has an up-market 550W PSU, a Quad processor, and 8Gb RAM, so it could easily handle a better card. It is the physical limitations that stymies me.

Can anyone help or advise?

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

I guess we probably should start a separate thread rather than hijack this ended one, but heh its anything goes Friday, so count me in....

There are some low profile single fan cards such as GTX750Ti which should just squeeze in maybe with bit of case or card cutting. I think i'll be looking to these guys when my gtx460s retire. The AMDs will probably run hotter.

I usually look around here and you can set the form factor etc.

However, if space is tight, cooling and airflow becomes a big problem, after building a few now, if you can buy a proper case - you get better cooling, more places for fans, more variety of cards etc.

Good luck.

Hiyah, yeah lets go for it :-)

Thanks for the Newegg link, I'll have a look at it. The main problem is that up market cards have two prongs and therefore need two slots to fit, I only have one spare on that board. They are usually also full length cards. I'm simply not into the game of stripping it all out and building it into a new case.

What costs in for me is GPU crunching not CPU work. Therefore a cheapy s/h base unit, mid-range PSU and card is good bangs for buck. The ATI 4770 is a good little card, but the rig could take something more powerful if only it could be fitted in.

I just googled for

Dell E520 gtx 750ti

The first link has several examples.

Thank you very much indeed

Thank you very much indeed for that, it is brilliant stuff!! I'll have a good look into it. Wow, that may just work. Not a great fan of Nvidia stuff but willing to be converted.

comparison

Specs

But I still wonder what increase in crunching ability i.e. RAC would result from a card change? And many of them on the web seem to be full length twin slot cards.

Yes you need to make sure

Yes you need to make sure they are not double slot GPUs or take up the space of 2, some say 1 slot but when you look at them, they have a fan that is larger than the card itself. What about this one? Not available here in the USA but maybe in Europe. Don't know much about Galaxy as I mostly use EVGA but they(evga) don't offer a single slot card.

Edit.. Of course, you have to be able to find it first..sorry about that. Doesn't look like anyone has any right now.

I think AMD dropped OpenCL support some time back for 4000 series, so the 4770 is a non starter at E@H.

Well it runs GPU work quite

Well it runs GPU work quite happily at Seti Beta and Seti Main :-)

Catalyst 13.9 (Win 7-64)

My apologies, i just checked at AMD it that does support OpenCL. It should work but that is the last supported driver dating back to September 2013 (I thought they dropped support around 12.4). Win 10 is a non starter - probably.

The 4770 are now old cards - so the real cost is the power they use for the results they return. Some of the 750 Ti are returning 65-70K RAC for a small amount of power - allegedly 60W. I'm guessing the 4770 might produce 25K? RAC and draw more power in doing so.

A rough rule of thumb is each watt is approximately 1 GBP/yr when running 24x7, so getting efficient GPUs and PSUs usually pay for themselves.
